Crush App Launches With Focus on Vetted Dates

A new Luxembourg-based dating platform called Crush is challenging the dominance of traditional swipe-based apps by focusing on vetted profiles and in-person meetups. Launched in early 2026 by IT specialist Tom Sawyer and co-founder Wesley Hourdequin, Crush aims to create a safer, more intentional dating experience amid growing frustration with ghosting, superficial chats, and safety concerns on mainstream apps.

Unlike conventional platforms, Crush requires users to attend organized real-world events to meet matches. Profiles are fully vetted by the team – referred to playfully as “crush coaches” – to confirm genuine identity and intentions. Once approved, users do not browse profiles online; instead, connections happen only at events where the founders attend in person to facilitate introductions and act as wingmen. This human-centered approach eliminates endless scrolling and reduces risks associated with anonymous online interactions.

Sawyer explained the motivation: “Crush is for singles who actually want to find their crush and not just the next acquaintance.” The platform deliberately hides profiles from public view to prevent gossip in Luxembourg’s small, close-knit community. “It’s normal in such a small country,” he noted, highlighting how visibility on apps like Tinder can lead to immediate sharing among acquaintances.

The model is gaining traction quickly. Hundreds of singles have signed up since launch, with the second event scheduled for March 4, 2026. The founders emphasize quality over quantity, prioritizing authentic conversations in controlled, safe settings. While Crush remains small-scale, its vetting process and event-first structure address common criticisms of digital dating: lack of authenticity, safety risks, and superficiality.
