Karima Ben Abdelmalek, CEO of happn, recently wrote a post on Startups that shared her insights on how AI could revolutionize the online dating experience, addressing both the opportunities and challenges it presents for the industry. As online dating evolves, Abdelmalek emphasized that AI should enhance user experiences without losing sight of authenticity and human connection.
happn has previously integrated AI to detect suspicious behaviours and profiles, using biometric technology to verify users, ensuring a safer environment. Abdelmalek also acknowledged the growing phenomenon of “dating fatigue,” where users become tired of repetitive experiences across apps. To combat this, happn introduced “Daily,” a feature that uses AI to handpick up to 10 curated profiles based on users’ shared interests and frequent meeting spots.
Looking ahead, Abdelmalek sees further potential for AI to drive partnerships between dating apps and industries like hospitality. She envisions a scenario where dating apps could suggest unique venues for dates, benefiting both users and local businesses. While other platforms have started to adopt AI where possible, such as Grindr’s efforts to build the first ever fully-featured AI wingman, most dating sites are still experimenting with the potential of what AI can do.
While AI’s role in dating apps is still developing, Abdelmalek believes that responsible innovation focused on user needs could help reignite the excitement of early dating apps, making AI a powerful tool for optimizing the experience – rather than just a marketing gimmick.
