Dating app OkCupid is partnering with real estate platform Opendoor to share new insights about post-breakup behaviours. The collaboration saw OkCupid add new matching questions to the app, gathering over 65,000 responses.
The month of March traditionally sees an uptick in divorces and breakups, leading to increased dating app usage and homeowners selling their property. In light of this, the two companies explore this journey in a recent blog post.
86% of singles on OkCupid stated that they would move out after a breakup with someone they live with. 55% said they would like to move out ASAP, while 13% said they would not be in a rush to change their living situation.
80% said that it would be preferable to live with their parents or on someone’s couch, rather than continue living with their ex. Overall, the situation can be difficult, with 76% of singles saying that selling property after a breakup is more stressful than even a cancelled flight.
The breakup process can be complex and emotional, and so Michael Kaye, Director of Brand Marketing and Communications at OkCupid, has shared some useful tips:
- “Take a moment. Have clear expectations about if you want to be the one to move out or stay in your shared space, and fairly divide up your belongings accordingly. Remember, there’s two people impacted by this breakup, and being fair will help move the process forward more quickly.”
- “Ask for help! Lean on your family or friends for support during this time. No one should have to go through a breakup on their own. Ask your ex to leave for a night, invite your friends over, order in and start packing. A new chapter can be exciting!”
- “Keep yourself busy. Moving out of a place with an ex, or having an ex move out, is a big change. Be kind to yourself, and be patient with your emotions.”
According to Opendoor’s 2024 First-Time Homebuyer Report, platonic co-buying is one option for individuals looking to find a new living situation. 77% of first-time home buyers got their home with a non-romantic partner, the report highlighted.
The blog post summarises that “whether you’re looking to sell your home and move out — and on — with minimal disruption to your life, or you’re ready to meet your next match, OkCupid and Opendoor have your back”.
