Afraid of Commitment? What to Do When He Just. Won’t. Commit.

So here you are… dating this guy, sharing laughs, deep convos, dreamy weekends—you even know his dog’s favorite snack—but the moment you bring up “what are we?” or (gasp) marriage… he suddenly turns into Houdini. ‍♂️Maybe he mumbles something vague like, “I’m just not ready,” or “Can’t we just see where this goes?” Maybe he straight-up says, “I don’t believe in labels.” And boom—there it is. The truth stings: he’s afraid of commitment.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. ‍♀️

I’ve worked with so many incredible, successful, radiant women who’ve landed smack dab in the middle of a situationship with a man who’s terrified of going all in. One minute you’re building something beautiful, the next he’s talking about “just being friends” or “needing space.” Meanwhile, you’re left feeling confused, hurt, and second-guessing everything.

Let’s talk about what’s really going on—and what you can actually do about it.

First, Let’s Name It: He’s Afraid of Commitment

Yes, it’s a thing. No, it’s not your fault. And no, you’re not “too much” or “moving too fast.”

Some men panic when things get real. Others love the perks of a relationship but dodge the responsibility and vulnerability that comes with true emotional intimacy. This fear of commitment can look like:

    • Constantly saying “I’m not ready” (even after months—or years—of dating)

    • Avoiding future plans

    • Saying he “needs to work on himself” (while you do all the emotional labor)

    • Pushing you away when things start getting good

The worst part? He may still call, text, flirt, and act like you’re his girlfriend—without giving you the relationship you truly want. Ugh.

    Here’s the Truth, Beautiful…

You deserve more than crumbs. You deserve someone who chooses you fully, not someone who’s afraid to label your love.

Yes, sometimes it takes men a little longer to open up. But if it’s been 3 months or more and he’s still giving you wishy-washy energy, it’s time to stop waiting and start taking action.

Let’s get into the steps that work, straight from my coaching program that’s helped thousands of women turn things around—or walk away stronger than ever.

Step 1: Put the Relationship on Probation ️

Yep, probation. This means taking a graceful but firm step back and letting him know that you are reevaluating things—because your dream relationship includes commitment, not “maybe someday” vibes.

    If you’ve been dating for:

It’s time to stop hoping and start resetting the dynamic with a guy who is afraid of commitment.

    Here’s how to do it:

The “Probation” Talk (Say This With Love, But Strength)

Start by being kind and calm. No blame. No drama. Try something like:

“I care about you deeply, and I’ve loved the time we’ve spent together. But I’m looking to create a fun, passionate, lasting partnership—one that’s moving toward marriage. I really hoped you were that person for me. But right now, I’m not so sure. I need to step back and figure out what’s best for me.”

You’re not giving an ultimatum—you’re stating a fact. This lets him feel the real possibility of losing you without making it a fight. And believe me, when a man who’s afraid of commitment sees what life looks like without you in it… well, things can shift fast.

Step 2: The “Cost of Loss” Talk

Still no movement from him? Then it’s time to lay it all out there—calm, clear, and without apology.

    Try saying:

“My commitment is to myself and the future I want—a marriage, maybe a family, and a partner who shows up fully. I think we could have had something truly amazing, but if you’re not willing or able to go there, I have to let go. Even though I love you, I need to make space for someone who isn’t afraid of commitment.”

Then (and this is the hard part)… walk away. ‍♀️ No more texts. No late-night calls. No checking his social. (I see you. ) Go do something fabulous for yourself—travel, dance, start that passion project, or just rest and reconnect with YOU.

What Makes a Man Afraid of Commitment?

Now, not all commitment-phobic men are lost causes. Some just need a wake-up call—and seeing you walk away with grace and self-respect? That’s one heck of a wake-up call.

So here’s what a man ready to commit will do:

    • Get into action: therapy, coaching, real convos about the future

    • Start making plans to move in, meet families, or buy a ring

    • Show up consistently, emotionally and practically

And if he doesn’t? That’s your answer.

If He Won’t Commit, Don’t Settle

Listen, I know your heart might be aching. You may be tempted to give him one more chance. But I want you to remember this: loving someone doesn’t mean you have to wait forever.

There are amazing men out there who are emotionally available, kind, successful, sexy—and not afraid of commitment. You don’t have to fix, chase, or convince them. They’ll just know.

You’re not asking for too much. You’re asking the wrong man. ❤️
