Rizz, founded in 2022 and gaining ground throughout 2023, has remained surprisingly popular despite the massive increase in apps using AI to assist with the dating experience. The app has gained millions of downloads since its release, with its AI tools proving to be a major draw for a specific (and, potentially, growing) subset of dating site users.
This isn’t the only example of this shift towards AI. Alongside major platforms like Bumble introducing AI wingmen and profile assistants to help users craft bios and messages that will get them noticed, a number of AI-specific apps and sites are beginning to crop up. By helping users overcome common pain points—like conversation fatigue or awkward messaging—AI tools like Rizz aim to boost user confidence and engagement, which naturally leads to higher retention rates.
However, the implementation of AI in dating apps also brings forth important considerations around privacy and control. While there have already been concerns raised about these dating assistants misrepresenting the person they’re assisting, there’s also the fact that AI itself isn’t flawless, and that regulations concerning AI are still being worked out in many countries.
Alongside that, there’s the fact that many people still don’t fully understand how AI works – a core example being the fact that many users treat platforms like ChatGPT as a Google alternative, which has led to infamous situations like ChatGPT creating fake legal cases in a Federal Court case.
AI dating apps and features are still in a relatively early stage of their life, but their popularity is obvious. Depending on the site, AI can be anything from a profile enhancer to a matchmaker, and dating platforms will have to adapt to both the positives and negatives of this increasing AI integration – unless they decide to abstain from AI entirely.
