Dating app Hily has introduced a new safety tool called “Consent Guard”, intended to prevent users from being exposed to unwanted explicit content by requiring consent before delivering such messages or images. The feature combines machine learning and algorithmic detection to flag content that potentially crosses into the sexual or explicit realm.
When the system detects text or image elements that could be considered X-rated, it issues a pop-up notifying the recipient that their match wants to send content of that nature – and clarifying that they will only see it if they explicitly agree. The recipient then has the option to consent or decline. If the recipient does not respond, the conversation proceeds normally without revealing the flagged content. Meanwhile, the sender sees a one-click request to seek permission.
Hily limits each user to up to three consent requests per chat, and users can adjust their personal settings at any time, choosing levels such as “hot,” “chill,” or “not tonight, please.” The new feature replaces Hily’s prior Explicit Filter tool, which had blurred images for user review. The feature was developed in consultation with sexologist and sex educator Dr. Mindy DeSeta, who contributed insight into consent dynamics and the experience of harassment in digital communication.
In Hily’s announcement, DeSeta stated: “Hily’s new Consent Guard feature actually empowers your sexuality by putting you in charge of how you date, what you share, and how sexy you want to get. Instead of having an explicit photo pop up at the worst possible moment, imagine getting a notification that someone wants to get a little hot and heavy. That’s mental foreplay!”
