A new survey by Indian dating app QuackQuack reveals contrasting approaches to Valentine’s Day among Gen Z and Millennial daters. The study, conducted among 10,853 active users aged 20–35 from metropolitan, suburban, and rural areas, shows a generational divide in how young Indians are choosing to engage – or disengage – with the holiday.

Among Gen Z respondents (aged 20–26), 33% described Valentine’s Day 2026 as a deliberate non-event, opting to pause new matches and limit interactions with existing ones. This “Romantic Fasting” reflects a conscious decision to avoid premature commitment or pressure to define relationships under the emotional weight of the day. Many cited comparison anxiety and forced milestones as reasons to step back, preferring natural progression over holiday-driven declarations. Six in ten Gen Z daters who remained active chose low-key check-ins – such as memes or emojis – over gifts or dates, prioritizing emotional protection and authenticity.

Millennials (aged 27–35), by contrast, approached the day more strategically. Thirty-nine percent of Millennial women and 21% of Millennial men in Tier 1 and 2 cities used Valentine’s Day as a compatibility checkpoint, evaluating effort, consistency, and alignment on long-term goals. A well-planned coffee date ranked higher than extravagant last-minute plans, signaling a focus on substance over performance. Nearly 43% made intentional plans with matches they viewed as having long-term potential, comfortable discussing exclusivity, future expectations, and emotional readiness.

QuackQuack Founder and CEO Ravi Mittal commented: “GenZs are going in total airplane mode this Valentine’s Day. Mostly, it is to avoid the pressure of labelling an ongoing connection, or going over-the-top one day and not being able to follow through the rest of the year. Though the young daters are serious about their matches, they are still in the exploratory phase where there’s no rush to define a relationship. Millennials, on the other hand, are picking up the pace.”
