The Korea Herald has shared new findings about the gender imbalance on online dating platforms in the country. Over 80% of online daters in South Korea are male, new insights reveal.
Yoon Moon-sik of the Korea Herald shared new insights regarding South Korea’s online dating demographics. It found that apps such as Tinder, Wise App, Wippy, Glam and Yangting, have men make up between 78% – 90% of their user base respectively.
While Korean men are more likely to use dating apps when compared to women, this doesn’t tell the full story. These insights revealed that women tend to use dating apps for around 4 hours each month, while men use them for around half that time.
Among age groups, singles in their 20s and 40s spent the most time on dating platforms, followed by those in their 30s.
South Korea has long been a difficult environment for marriage and relationships. In January 2023, Global Dating Insights reported on how women in the country were leading a marriage and birth strike.
The New York Times shared a 2022 survey which found that 65% of women in the country do not want children, citing the expensive cost-of-living, and the outdated expectations placed on women.
Some women in the country adopted new dating principles to protest these societal inequalities, promising they would not get involved in dating, sex, or marriage.
