It helps reduce stress, protects your energy, and helps you feel better without a full lifestyle makeover.
Self-care, taking care of yourself, personal upkeep or taking a breather — they all mean the same thing.
Taking care of yourself was my very first life tip, but frankly, this bears repeating. Many, many times because we just don’t do it.
Self-care, taking care of yourself, is basically just maintenance.
Just like a car, if it doesn’t have good maintenance and upkeep, it’s not going to run well, it won’t get you where you want to go and it’s going to break down suddenly, usually at the worst time.
It’s the same with your body. You have to maintain it. And I don’t just mean bubble baths and spa days — I mean constant care.
Try to:
- Go to be before you start overthinking, stressing or spiraling.
- Eat something that’s real instead of skipping meals or grabbing a granola bar.
- Don’t try to keep everyone else happy by forgetting to make yourself happy.
- Don’t feel guilty when you can’t handle something right that instant.Let some things stay undone if it helps you not overdo it.
Do things that help you feel human.
You don’t have to reinvent your lifestyle. All you have to do is just do small things to keep yourself functional.
The goal of self-care is not perfection. It’s to make sure you stop running on empty. You need to be well-rested, well-fed and emotionally steady. This is not a luxury. It IS a necessity.
If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else.
You don’t have to earn rest. You don’t have to prove you’re exhausted to deserve care.
Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean you’re weak or fragile.
Take care of yourself before you fall apart trying to take care of everything else.
