Spotify Expands In-App Messaging with Group Chats for Up to 10 Users

Spotify has rolled out group chat functionality within its in-app messaging feature, allowing users to share podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks with up to 10 people in a single conversation. The update, announced in late January 2026, builds on the one-on-one Messages tool introduced in August 2025, which enables content sharing directly in the app without switching to external platforms.

Group chats are limited to users who have previously interacted through Spotify’s social features, such as collaborative playlists, Jam sessions, or Blends. This restriction ensures conversations remain within established connections, aligning with the feature’s focus on enhancing shared listening experiences rather than broad social networking.

Messages, including group chats, are encrypted at rest and in transit, though they lack end-to-end encryption. Spotify has emphasized that the tool complements external sharing and encourages continued use of other messaging apps for general communication. The expansion follows recent additions to the messaging system, including real-time listening activity sharing and “Request to Jam” invitations for live collaborative sessions.

Spotify’s ongoing push to make the platform more interactive makes sense – more and more music platforms are making an effort to introduce social tools. Competitors like Apple Music have introduced collaborative playlists and shared listening sessions, while platforms such as SoundCloud and Bandcamp emphasize community features.

The feature is rolling out gradually on mobile devices (iOS and Android) in supported markets, with availability expected to broaden in the coming weeks. It is accessible to both Free and Premium users aged 16 and older.
