A survey by Kiseki, a global matchmaking platform under the Social Discovery Group, highlights a significant trend: Japanese singles are increasingly interested in connecting with people from around the world. Originally revealed on Hackernoon, the findings suggest a growing openness to international relationships and friendships, spurred on by Japan’s evolving attitudes toward global cultures.
The survey, which included over 230 participants across different age groups, revealed that 95% of Japanese singles are eager to engage with foreigners. This interest spans genders, with 96% of men and 94% of women expressing enthusiasm. Many are motivated by a desire for friendship and cultural exchange, with 70% seeking to forge friendships and 56% aiming to practice foreign languages. While friendship and language learning are key drivers, romance remains a notable factor, with 21% actively seeking love.
The rise in international romance is evident, with 45% of participants having had romantic relationships with foreigners. Women reported higher rates of such experiences (50%) compared to men (36%). Digital platforms play a crucial role, as 32% of respondents have met foreigners online. Preferences for connecting through online platforms and dating apps are strong, with over 70% willing to explore digital avenues.
Kiseki, operating in over 80 countries, has emerged as a key platform fostering these connections. This gradual shift towards seeking international relationships has effectively introduced a much larger portion of Japan’s singles into the worldwide dating pool, which could directly mean more users for apps that would normally have gone overlooked. Kiseki itself has seen many Japanese users making use of AI translation and secure video calls to engage with matches outside of Japan, which may lead to the platform getting an explosion of new users in coming months.
