Alternative Social Media Apps Surge as Australia Teen Ban Begins

Alternative social media platforms are seeing a sharp rise in popularity in Australia following the introduction of the country’s landmark ban on social media use for children under 16. As the new rules took effect on Wednesday, many young users and their families have turned to lesser-known or newly positioned apps that fall outside the scope of the restrictions.

Leading the surge is Lemon8, a video and photo-sharing app owned by TikTok parent company ByteDance. Lemon8 has become the most-downloaded free app on Apple’s App Store in Australia, highlighting how quickly user behavior can shift in response to regulation. The app combines elements of Instagram and Pinterest, focusing on lifestyle content such as fashion, food, and travel, and has been promoted as a more curated, less chaotic alternative to mainstream social media.

Other apps climbing the download charts include Yope, a private, friends-only photo-sharing platform, and Coverstar, which markets itself as “the safest alternative to TikTok” for children aged 9 to 16. These platforms emphasize smaller networks, limited discoverability, and stronger parental controls, features that appear to resonate with families navigating the new digital landscape.

Australia’s social media ban requires major technology companies, including TikTok and Meta Platforms Inc.’s Instagram, to prevent under-16s from holding accounts or face fines of up to A$49.5 million ($33 million). The government says the policy aims to reduce harms linked to excessive social media use, such as mental health issues, online bullying, and exposure to inappropriate content.

While supporters see the ban as a necessary step to protect young people, critics argue it may simply push children toward less regulated platforms rather than reduce overall screen time. The early surge in alternative apps appears to support that concern, raising questions about how effective the policy will be in practice – and will likely cause many new startup apps to see big jumps in user activity if they can offer alternative options.
