Dating.com, part of the Social Discovery Group, has unveiled its latest study on digital dating trends for cuffing season, revealing that 89% of U.S. singles are open to finding a partner for the colder months, with many exploring virtual and long-distance relationships. As winter approaches, the desire for companionship increases, and more singles are turning to online dating to make connections beyond their local areas.
The survey highlights a growing trend toward starting – and maintaining – long-distance relationships by relying on virtual platforms. Of those seeking a partner, 32% are open to maintaining online-only relationships through virtual reality (VR) interactions, video calls, and digital gifts. Key drivers for this trend include affordability (65%), companionship (57%), and escapism (32%).
Long-distance connections are on the rise as a whole, with 83% of respondents having dated someone from another state and 71% having engaged with someone from another country. The study found that 40% of daters favor digital relationships for their lower pressure, while 62% feel more comfortable discussing personal desires with virtual matches.
While online relationships have only gotten more popular as more platforms appear that can facilitate them, it’s no surprise that they are going to gain even more prominence during the cuffing season. With so many people looking for new partners in both the long-term and short-term, online dating platforms are likely to see a spike in activity over the Winter.
