Yoel Roth has announced that he is joining Match Group as the dating app company’s new Vice President of Trust & Safety. He previously served as Head of Trust & Safety at Twitter, leaving the role after Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social media app.
In a recent post on LinkedIn, Roth announced his new role, saying “I swiped right on Match Group!”.
Before joining Match Group, Roth worked for 7 years at Twitter in a number of trust & safety – related positions. In May 2022, he was promoted to Head of Trust & Safety at the platform, where he oversaw content moderation, integrity, and account security teams.
After less than two weeks of Elon Musk’s leadership of Twitter (now X), Roth decided to leave the social media platform, TechCrunch reports. Musk later “attacked him [Roth] with baseless accusations in an attempt to damage his reputation”, the publication also explained.
Looking ahead to the new role, Roth told Wired that “It’s not an exaggeration to say this is a dream job for me”. As part of his 2016 PhD research and dissertation, Roth explored location-based dating apps.
In an interview with Lauren Goode of Wired, he outlined his perspective on trust & safety issues within the online dating industry and Match Group’s work so far. These include dealing with scam or spam accounts, of which Match Group removes about 44 spam accounts every minute across its platforms, he explained.
When it comes to safer offline interactions for dating app users, Roth stated that “once you make the decision to meet somebody face to face, there’s a lot going on that we as a platform don’t know about”.
However, he highlighted that apps can act upon reports of offline bad behaviour, and that they can coordinate with law enforcement to have bad actors dealt with by the authorities and removed from dating apps.
