YouApp: Singaporean Dating App with 62% Female Users

YouApp is a Singaporean dating app that harnesses matching strategies of the East and West to connect like-minded people. In a recent interview, the platform’s CEO stated that it has over 20,000 monthly active users, of which 62% are women.

The dating platform was launched in 2023 by entrepreneur Douglas Gan, and is inspired by the Japanese principle of ‘Ichi-go Ichi-e’ – which means to value every moment with others. To bring people together, it harnesses astrology, the Chinese zodiac, and numerology, as well as Myers-Briggs personality theory.

In a recent interview with South China Morning Post (SCMP), Gan highlighted that using these various matching philosophies, powered by Artificial Intelligence, is proving to be popular with women.

The platform currently has 20,000 monthly active users, of which 62% are women. It has quickly expanded to the USA, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico, and Spain, with its largest markets – Singapore and Malaysia – remaining close to home.

“We are lucky because most of the apps have more men, but we have more women”, Gan highlighted. When using YouApp, women may be tempted to “ask for his birthday, then she will go check the horoscope and Zodiac”, he added.

“We automate the compatibility part and break down the difficulty. Because of that, we got a lot of ladies who joined the app, and they really liked it”, Gan told SCMP.

When it comes to the business side of the platform, YouApp recently launched its premium paid membership tier. While this has only amassed a few hundred subscribers so far, Gan told interviewers that the company would break even once this number hits 5,000. In the meantime, the platform will also be raising funds through capital investment.

Looking ahead, the platform is looking to adopt more ways that people can match, including Tarot reading for example. YouApp could begin to arrange meetings between users and Tarot experts, opening a new avenue for revenue, he suggested.
