The start of 2025 has seen an unprecedented surge in sign-ups for Illicit Encounters, a dating platform designed for those seeking extramarital relationships. The site reports a 33% increase in new member registrations compared to the same period last year, making it the busiest January for the platform in over a decade.
Borrowing the term “Blue Monday” from a study about the most depressing day of the year (which normally falls on the third Monday in January), the surge was attributed to post-holiday dissatisfaction and the desire for a fresh start in the new year. The surge is users pushed the platform to the limits of what it could handle on such short notice, and other affair or extramarital dating platforms likely had similar user spikes.
Jessica Leoni, a spokesperson for Illicit Encounters, described the spike as unprecedented.
“People spend weeks in close quarters during the festive season, which can highlight existing cracks,” she said. “January feels like a fresh start, and for some, that means exploring new connections, even outside their relationship.”
Given that the new year serves as a perfect excuse to switch up major parts of your life, there’s a good chance that this kind of activity will continue throughout January, and possibly into Feburary. Given that many users were searching for holiday relationships before Christmas with the intent of them being a temporary comfort – also known As Sledging – there could be a major pushback from people who found themselves in unwanted or uncomfortable long-term relationships.
