Social Discovery Group Releases 2025 Virtual Intimacy Report

Social Discovery Group has released its 2025 Virtual Intimacy Report, a report focused specifically on online dating trends that might shape 2025’s overall dating habits. While some of the statistics are relatively straightforward, they paint a clear picture of how dating is likely to change as we go further into the year.

With an increased focus on genuine connections, apps are introducing features designed to foster honesty and security in an era where virtual connections play a significant role in romantic relationships. This is primarily because users are flocking to platforms that allow for authentic matches – the group noted that 70% of participants in previous studies expressed a desire for their profiles to more accurately reflect their true selves, and 84% were frustrated by exaggerations or dishonesty in others’ profiles.

This also applies to selfies and photos. Selfie-based identity verification will likely be a major draw going forward, especially in an era where AI makes it easier to construct entirely fake identities. Features like time-stamped selfies and video chats aim to address concerns over misleading profiles or catfishing, with apps such as Tinder, Bumble, and Plenty of Fish incorporating these tools. HUD has also introduced blurred video chats to add an extra layer of safety.

The report highlights a growing interest in personalized digital experiences, with 71% of singles feeling less lonely through virtual messaging. While traditional AI-generated responses are criticized for lacking authenticity, tools like Hinge’s AI Prompt Feedback are seen as a positive step, guiding users to craft more engaging and meaningful messages specific to the exact chats that they’re having.

On the other hand, instant gratification is also a major need. The report states that quick dopamine hits are now an ingrained part of many modern dating app users’ lives, and that platforms will need to focus on things like gamification or fast conversation starts to keep their attention. This could mean that dating needs to get faster, and dating apps are the best place for that to happen.
