Fine. You?
That was our script for six months.
I’d ask. She’d shrug. We’d scroll.
Then I found her sobbing over cold pasta at midnight:
“We feel like… roommates.”
Truth? That “caring” question is emotional bleach.
It sterilizes your connection.
The Fix in 3 Parts
(Using the Science → Pain → Solution Sandwich)
1. Why Your Brain Hates This Question
Your brain files “How was your day?” as noise. Like “Pass the salt.” Or “Did you pay the electric bill?”
Your Silent Pain
- It forces dead answers: “Met Todd. Traffic sucked.”
- It whispers: “I don’t want your messy humanity.”
- You both leave starving for real connection.
We renamed it ‘The Zombie Question.’ Now we laugh when it slips out.
2. The Vicious Cycle You’re Stuck In
Night 1: “How was work?” → “Fine.” → Silence.
Night 37: Same script → Resentment → Tears in the bathroom.
Your 3 Hidden Fears
- You’re avoiding real risk
- You’re protecting your exhaustion
- You’re both playing dead to avoid rejection
“Now we text: ‘Zombie alert! Abort mission!’”
The 3-Word Resurrection
Swap: “How was your day?”
For: “What FELT ALIVE today?”
(Not “good.” Not “meaningful.” ALIVE.)
3. How “Alive” Changes Everything
“Alive” triggers emotional storytelling. No one is “alive” in spreadsheets. They’re alive in:
- Rage at Todd’s promotion
- Joy from a stranger’s smile
- Grief over a parking ticket
Your Action Plan
Step 1: Ask only when you can STOP and LOOK UP
Step 2: Follow with: “Where did you feel that in your body?”
Step 3: Respond: “Damn… tell me more” → No fixing allowed
Last Tuesday she whispered: ‘I felt alive when… you walked in the room.’ We ugly-cried together.
4. When You Slip Up (Because You Will)
The Reality
Defaulting to zombie talk is human. But you can recover.
Your Toolkit
When exhausted:
- “What’s one texture from today?”
(Example: “Rain on my face… free therapy.”)
When they shut down:
- “Show me a photo from today? Why this one?”
When you zombie out:
- “I just asked a zombie question. Can I try again?”
“We keep a ‘Zombie Jar’ — $1 per slip. Funds date night.”
Your 24-Hr Challenge
- BANISH “How was your day?” from meals/texts TODAY
- ASK ONE PERSON: “What felt alive today?”
- WATCH FOR:
- Dilated pupils

- Leaning closer

- “No one ever asks that…”

Love isn’t killed by conflict.
It’s starved by indifference.
