Pure Dating App Introduces Age Checks Under New UK Safety Rules

Berlin-based dating platform Pure has rolled out a new Age Verification feature exclusively for its UK users in response to the Online Safety Act, signalling its intention to lead in safety and compliance within the online-dating sector. The announcement was made on October 14 2025, wioth the verification going into effect almost immediately afterwards.

Pure’s latest feature is designed to confirm user age via a two-step process, conducted in partnership with identity-verification provider Veriff. The process begins with an in-app face scan that estimates age without requiring image uploads. If further verification is needed, users are prompted to submit a photo ID plus selfie for verification. According to the release, this mechanism enables the company to verify that users are adults before they access the platform’s services.

According to Pure’s head of Trust & Safety, “Our users have told us loud and clear: safety is non-negotiable. The Online Safety Act provides an essential framework, but Pure’s commitment to user protection goes beyond compliance.” Pure emphasises the importance of privacy and secure processing: age-verification data is encrypted and handled in line with its Privacy Policy and Veriff’s own policy, with support available in multiple languages and dedicated in-app assistance.

The UK’s Online Safety Act, in force for user-to-user services and platforms with significant UK user bases, requires platforms to implement effective age-assurance measures for children’s protection – which involves handling sensitive data. In other words, Pure seems to be attempting to set a benchmark for how these systems can be created without putting user data at risk. Of course, whether or not this will actually hold water in the event of a breach remains to be seen.
