IRLY, a personality-first dating app founded in Vancouver and targeting Gen Z users, has been acquired by Switzerland-based DUA AG. Financial terms of the all-cash asset sale were not disclosed.
Launched during Connor Rose’s time at the University of British Columbia through the entrepreneurship@UBC program, IRLY positioned itself as an alternative to swipe-heavy platforms by emphasizing conversation prompts, profile games, and compatibility signals over photo-first impressions. Co-founded by Rose and Laura Rollock, with early involvement from internet personality Cameron Dallas, the app aimed to counter what Rose described in 2022 as “dating app misrepresentation” – pressure to create idealized profiles optimized for quick judgments rather than authentic connections.
The acquisition integrates IRLY into DUA AG’s portfolio of niche, youth-oriented dating brands across Europe. DUA AG previously acquired Spotted in 2022, a “crossed paths” platform that had raised $14.5 million and gained international attention. The move expands DUA’s footprint in intentional, community-focused dating products.
No immediate changes to IRLY’s user experience or branding have been announced, though the deal provides access to DUA’s infrastructure for potential future scaling. IRLY’s trajectory reflects a pattern seen in other Canadian startups, and startups in general: carving out a differentiated niche, then attracting international acquirers with operational scale that could expand it beyond its original scope.
