Threads Tests “DM Me” Shortcut to Boost In-Stream Messaging

Threads is experimenting with a new feature that simplifies starting direct messages from within public posts, aiming to encourage more private, real-time conversations on the platform. Announced on February 26, 2026, the test – currently live in the U.S. and Canada – allows users to include phrases like “DM me” or “message me” in a post. These terms become clickable links that instantly open a DM chat with the poster.

The update gives creators, influencers, and everyday users an easy way to prompt direct outreach on specific topics without requiring followers to navigate to a profile or search for a messaging option. Threads emphasized that users retain full control over messaging settings, including who can send requests (e.g., only people they follow or approved followers). The feature does not override existing privacy preferences.

Meta executives, including Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, have noted that users increasingly share more in Stories and DMs than in main feeds. Public posting carries risks—permanent records, arguments, and scrutiny—pushing people toward private, trusted spaces for authentic connection. Threads initially launched in 2023 without native DMs, but added messaging in July 2025. Recent experiments further signal Meta’s push to grow messaging activity on the app.

For brands and marketers, the “DM me” shortcut could become a valuable engagement tool. By embedding clickable calls-to-action in posts, creators and companies can streamline inquiries, customer support, or fan interaction without redirecting users away from the feed. For regular users, it opens up easier communication, without subverting the user’s abilities to close or limit their DMs with the platform’s existing settings.
