Tinder Rolls Out Mandatory Face Check for New UK Users

Tinder has expanded its facial verification system to the United Kingdom, requiring all new Tinder users to complete a Face Check video selfie scan during signup. The rollout, announced on March 25, 2026, follows the feature’s implementation for new users in the U.S., Canada, Australia, India, and parts of Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

The process works by having users record a short video selfie, which Tinder’s system analyzes to confirm it matches the photos in their profile. Successful verification earns a “Photo Verified” badge. The technology is also designed to detect users attempting to operate multiple accounts. Tinder first introduced basic photo verification in 2021 and video verification in 2023, later adding ID checks for those seeking a verification mark.

Tinder cites internal data showing that Face Check has reduced exposure to potential bad actors – including spam, scams, and fake profiles – by over 60%, and decreased related user reports by more than 40%. The company positions the feature as a key tool for improving safety and trust on the platform, particularly as scams become harder to spot. A 2025 survey of UK singles aged 18–24 found that 63% believe scams are more difficult to identify than ever.

While Face Check aims to enhance verification and deter fraud, it also raises questions about privacy and the balance between safety measures and user convenience. Tinder maintains that the process is secure and focused on preventing misuse. The expansion comes amid heightened scrutiny of dating apps’ safety practices, both due to dangers like AI and deepfakes as well as multiple recent lawsuits against big apps that failed to protect their users.
