After piloting ID verification in Australia and New Zealand, Tinder will bring the option to users in a host of new countries. The feature verifies identities through a video selfie and a scan of a Driver’s Licence or Passport.
Users in the U.S, UK, Brazil and Mexico will get access to Tinder’s ID verification option over the coming months, Tinder has shared. The initiative was piloted in Australia and New Zealand, where verified users received 67% more matches than their counterparts, the dating app shared.
This enhanced verification process asks users to submit a video selfie, as well as a scan of a valid Driver’s Licence or Passport. From there, the feature will check whether the selfie matches the photo on the ID and the user profile’s photos.
This verification process will also use the ID document scan to check the user’s date of birth.
Users who complete both the ID and photo verification features will receive a blue checkmark on their profile. For those who only complete one of the two, they will receive a blue camera or blue ID document icon respectively.
“People want to feel safe and confident when connecting and communicating with their matches, and we applaud Tinder for giving users this additional option to help confirm their match is the person in their profile,” said Pamela Zaballa, CEO of advocacy group NO MORE.
“We believe ID Verification is an important tool users can adopt to help prove they are the person in their photos as well as help provide some peace of mind when deciding to meet someone off the app,” said Ted Bunch, Chief Development Officer of A Call To Men, which promotes healthy and respectful masculinity.
“By giving this option to more users, Tinder is giving users more choice and options in how they connect and ultimately feel safer when exploring new connections”, Bunch added.
