The ways we cope with the stress of life can make a huge difference in the quality of our lives.
If we cope by distracting ourselves, then we are just distracted all the time, not living by our best intentions. If we numb ourselves out with alcohol or drugs, or comfort ourselves with food or porn or shopping … we are just avoiding life, and our health and bank accounts might steadily get worse and worse.
So finding a healthy way to cope with stress can be a life-changer.
Take a moment to notice how you’ve been coping with stress. Is it numbing, avoidance, blowing up at people, complaining, eating comfort foods? What effect does that coping have on your life?
What ways of coping with stress would be healthier for you? Some examples:
- Go for a walk
- Meditate
- Do some deep breathing
- Exercise
- Talk to someone who will try to understand you (friend or a therapist)
- Do some stretching or yoga
- Journal or take time to reflect
These are simple, free, and healthy. They’re even really enjoyable!
