Lamu Launches, Uses AI to Replace Swiping with Matchmaking

A new Seattle-based dating app called Lamu is taking a deliberate approach to combat dating app fatigue, leveraging AI to facilitate meaningful connections rather than endless swiping. Founded by former Meta and TikTok engineer Ada Jin, Lamu launched in early 2026 with the goal of helping users find compatible partners efficiently while respecting their time and emotional energy.

Unlike traditional swipe-based apps, Lamu operates as a digital matchmaking service. Users pay a one-time $9.99 registration fee designed to deter fake profiles, then begin an interactive onboarding process with Lamu’s AI. The AI asks engaging questions (via text or voice) to understand values, lifestyle, interests, and relationship goals. It then generates a “love score” and curates one or two highly compatible matches per week, revealing only first name, age, city, occupation, and select hobbies or interests initially.

If both parties express mutual interest, Lamu creates a group chat where the AI acts as a “wingman,” guiding conversation with thoughtful prompts and suggestions. Photos are shared only after mutual interest is confirmed, ensuring users have the “full picture” before deciding to meet in person. The slower pace – deliberately limiting options – aims to reduce choice overload and encourage intentional dating.

Jin, who experienced burnout from legacy apps’ hook-up focus and superficial matching, sees Seattle as the ideal testing ground. “Seattle has the infamous ‘freeze,’ and loneliness is real here,” she told GeekWire. “AI can help penetrate that by facilitating real connections.” She co-founded Lamu with University of Washington computer science student Georgiy Lapin after moving to the city in June 2025.

Jin’s vision prioritizes clarity and direction over volume. “I’d rather do it once and find the right person,” she said. By combining AI personalization with human-centered pacing, Lamu positions itself as an antidote to swipe fatigue, especially for users seeking serious and low-pressure connections.
