Study Reveals Growing Percentage of Singles Are Open to Long-Distance Relationships

A new study released by Dating.com – part of Social Discovery Group, the company behind over 65 online dating sites – has revealed that more singles are looking past geographic borders in their quest for a relationship.

According to the research, 83% of American singles surveyed have dated someone who is based in another state, and 71% have been in a relationship with someone who lives in another country.

“Advanced technology makes it easier than ever to nurture connections even at a distance. Online dating features powered by artificial intelligence, video capabilities, and virtual reality are opening the door to a wider range of potential partners to explore, and singles aren’t letting geographic locations impact them in the same way they did in the past,” said Alex Kudos, Chief Marketing Officer of Social Discovery Group. The recent Dating.com review describes which tech features help singles feel connected at a distance.

Summer is a particularly popular season for dating abroad according to the study, with singles in the US looking for love in Canada, Spain, Greece, Italy and Brazil in particular during the months of July to August. Language barriers aren’t phasing many daters, with 21% of respondents saying they would be willing to learn a new language to better communicate with their international love match.

57% of respondents said they would be open to meeting someone from a different state this summer, with the number increasing to 65% for those living in cities. Destination dating holds similar appeal for men and women, with 44% of single women interested in travelling to meet a match this summer, compared to 54% of men.

The research by Dating.com suggests that summer flames can burn in all seasons; rather than fizzling out when the summer season comes to a close, the flings show potential to turn into long-term relationships, with 64% of respondents reporting that a previous casual hook-up had turned into something more serious and lasted at least a year.

Data proved that the pandemic has changed thoughts on long distance dating, with 71% of daters interested in building cross-country connections today, compared to just 12% pre-pandemic.

While summer flings have typically had a casual nature associated with them, Social Discovery Group is seeing a trend of longevity, with seasonal situationships evolving into fully committed relationships. Daters have become more nomadic than ever, and are much more open minded to the idea of long distance connections and cross cultural dating.

Social Discovery Group provides users with the technology features that they need to overcome borders and make connections around the world. Singles should remain open-minded to the possibility of a more serious connection when it comes to dating this summer, especially with the possibility of using hi-tech online dating technology to deepen the dating pool and make matches in different regions around the world. When it comes to dating, for new love adventures.
