As Raksha Bandhan is coming on 9th August 2025, there are many preparations going on. The vibe is all around, so I thought of writing about it
It’s a special Indian festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It’s a day full of love, care, gifts, and lots of memories.
The Meaning of Raksha Bandhan
Raksha means protection, and Bandhan means bond or tie. So, Raksha Bandhan means the bond of protection. On this day, a sister ties a rakhi (a colorful thread) on her brother’s wrist, and in return, the brother promises to protect her always.
The Story Behind Raksha Bandhan
There are many stories, but the most popular one is from Mahabharata. Once, Lord Krishna hurt his finger during a fight. Princess Draupadi quickly tore a piece of her saree and tied it on his bleeding finger. Krishna was touched by this sweet act. He promised to protect her forever. Later, when Draupadi was in trouble, Krishna helped her because of that promise.
This story shows the pure love and protection between a brother and sister, even if they’re not real siblings by blood.
How We Celebrate Raksha Bandhan Today
In modern times, the way we celebrate may have changed a bit, but the emotions are the same.
Sisters buy or make rakhis and tie them on their brother’s wrists. They also give sweets and sometimes little gifts.
Brothers give gifts in return like money, chocolates, or something meaningful.
Video calls and online rakhis are common now for brothers living far away. Many girls also tie rakhi to cousins, friends, or even soldiers as a sign of respect and protection.
Some people even celebrate Raksha Bandhan with their sisters, because protection goes both ways now.
I celebrate Rakhi in a slightly different way. I tie a thread to all the members of my family, starting from my grandpa, my mom, brothers, sister-in-laws, sisters, uncle,aunt, nephews, and nieces.
Why It Still Matters
In today’s fast world, Raksha Bandhan reminds us to stop and appreciate the people who love and support us. It’s not just about gifts but it’s more about emotional connection, trust, and the promise to be there for each other, no matter what.
Whether you’re near or far from your sibling, Raksha Bandhan is a perfect excuse to say I’m lucky to have you in my life.
